What is it
The SPLN-JRNL Extension is a simple effective daily, weekly, and monthly journal. Drawing from a template, I can use it to quickly enter a variety of information I need. I find this system to be the highlight of the “High speed to entry” quality I detail in Strwbrry Garden - Markdown Vault.
Why Did I want it
I had a need for a quick and useful timed note system. My main three use cases I found using note apps for were
- Natural journal and expression
- Free form notes and to-do lists
- Hourly schedule of my day
In simple practical terms, I needed a digital equivalent of a daily planner, and a stack of sticky notes.
How the System Works
On all platforms, in the tool bar, there is a button labeled “Open Today” (Right clicking this gives options for Week, Month, and Annual journals). Clicking this duplicates a template I have stored in Daily Journal and opens it with the current date as the title.
The template is made off three main sections.
- An empty three line space for ANY text or notes I need.
- 3 Check-boxes forming a to-do list for ANY purpose.
- Numbered check-boxes, from 8-12, and then again from 1-12. This represents an hourly list of my day, allowing for fill-in and checking off hours I’ve passed.
There is also an additional quote I’ve written at the very top of the document.
An important part of the structure of it in the acceptance of the natural and chaotic usage of it. I will not always have time when intended to use this journal, as it takes time, careful effort, and a healthy mind. A weekly journal might not always be entered at the end of a week, nor a monthly journal filled in at the beginning of a new one, and that is to be expected, and perfectly fine.
It is minimal, but exactly what my use cases require.
